From Survey Creation to Data

This chapter will step you through the typical method of creating, launching and extracting the data from a typical online research project.

It includes:

  • Logging on to SMP
  • The steps to launching your survey
  • Creating your survey - often referred to as scripting,
  • Testing the survey before launch
  • Setting quotas - if you are using them,
  • Deploying the survey - setting into the receive data mode,
  • Monitoring its progress,
  • Closing the survey,
  • Downloading the data.

1. Logging on and Creating your first survey.

The first step in creating your new survey is to go to the SMP Surveys web site (http://v10.smpsurveys.com/) and select Client Login. Alternatively, go straight to the domain http://v9.smpsurveys.com and the following screen will appear.

Log on to the system using your Username and Password.

Once you have logged on you will be taken to your SMP site were you can create your new survey. The main dashboard will look like this.  It contains all the surveys for that account.

2. Stepping through the status levels to launch your survey.

There are four stages you need to understand and step through in order to launch a survey. These stages are:

  1. Designing mode - This is the initial mode where you design and script your survey,
  2. Test mode - moving to this mode allows you to test your survey, run the testbot to generate dummy data testing skip logic, piping, quotas etc,
  3. Deployed mode - this is the mode your survey must be in when you launch to collect, monitor and extract data,
  4. Closed - the survey is over, you can now close it and extract the data.

Selecting one of the options in the top right corner of the main page will list only the files that are currently in that status.

Clicking on each of these icons will reveal the surveys you currently have in each of these modes - Designing, Test, Deployed and Closed.

You need to move through the three modes - Designing -> Test Mode -> Deployed to launch a survey and begin collecting data. To move back to design mode select "Redesign Survey" from the drop down menu, (explained below) Moving up each mode is described later.

If you need to go back to change your survey you need to put it back into "Design Mode".

To do this select "Redesign survey" from the drop down menu which you open by clicking on the menu at the end of the survey line (circled below).

NOTE: Any data collected before you return a survey to "Design Mode" will be archived and can be retrieved but will not be a part of the changed and re-deployed survey data set.
