Quick Start Tutorial


If you are the type of person who likes to leap in and just get going then this one pager will get you started quickly.

However reading chapter the next chapter; 'From Survey Creation to Data Collection' will better prepare you to write and launch your surveys.  


There are four stages you need to understand and step through in order to conduct a survey in SMP. 

  • Designing Mode.
    This is the initial mode where you design, script and do some preliminary testing of your new survey.
     
  • Test mode.
    Move into this mode when you have finished scripting your survey.  Here you can do further testing including running the TestBot program in real time to generate dummy data and test skip logic, piping, quotas etc.
     
  • Deployed Mode.
    Move into this mode to launch your survey and begin to collect data.  You can also monitor your survey progress and quotas, extract data a data set or run a top-line analysis.

  • Closed.
    The survey has ended and you have closed it.  

Note: You can move back to "Design" mode from any of the other modes by selecting "Redesign Survey" from the drop down menu, (explained below) 

On the main dashboard are the four stages your surveys can be in (as shown below).  To filter your list of surveys and see only those that are in one of these modes, click on one of the four labels below.  The pointer will move to that heading and the surveys shown will be ones in that stage of development.


1. Create your survey.

The first stage is to create a survey.

Click on the create survey button in the top left corner - shown below

The following pop up will appear. Fill in the details regarding this survey. (see Survey Details Page for more information about completing this page - or just go for it)

Press 'Create' when you are finished.  The survey will be created and you will be taken to the "Survey Editor" to begin scripting your survey.


Note: You must fill in at least the 'Title' option, and it must be unique. The others can be left blank for now and changed latter as needed.

2. The Survey Editor

The initial screen in the survey editor will have no questions in it and will be blank. The exmple below has had several questions added to it allready which are shown in the left hand pane.

The center pane shows how the currently selected survey question will look on the screen.  It is a working verision of the question.  Note that the answer skip instructions will also be shown on this center screen but not on the distributed survey.

The right pane are the parameters that you populate to build your question.



To add questions to your survey click on the "Add Question" button (circled below)


A pop up will appear.  Select the question type from this list.  The default is the "Single Select".

Note:  You can change this question type latter if you choose without loosing the formatting that you have completed.


The right hand pane will now contain the question elements that need completed to create a question.  Complete the following elements to create your question.




The above elements create the following question.  Note that it appears in the center pane as it will appear online and the question has been added to the question tree in the left hand pane.


To add more questions select the "Add Question" button and repeat the process.

When you are finished you will end up with a Survey Editor page that looks something like this.
