The Survey Detail Screen

Introduction

When you create a new survey the first thing you need to do is to fill in the survey details in the Survey Detail screen.

This will open automatically when you press the Create Survey button to create a new survey.  All of the details up to and including the "Project Manager" need to be filled in at this time. The other items can be filled in at a latter date depending on the requirements of your survey.

The other way of opening the Survey Detail screen is by navigating to the Question Editor by clicking on the Edit Survey icon that appears when you hover the mouse over a survey that is in design mode, and then clicking on the "Survey Detail" button in the top panel of icons.

The Survey Details options

The screen below shows the options available for setting on a survey wide basis.  Explanations of each option follow below.

On this screen are a number of options that set up and describe your survey, including some of its look and feel items and its behaviours or responses to certain conditions that will occur during the survey.

From the top then the parameters that you can set are:

Title:  the name of your survey

Description:  a short description of what the survey is about or other details that may be of use to you later.

Commencement Date:  the date your survey will start - click on the text box to see a popup calendar and select the date.  Note, this date does not have an impact on the running of the survey,

Client:  Who is the survey for.

Job No:  What is the job number – if you do not use job numbers just enter any text.

Project manager:  The person responsible for the survey.

Back Button:  If you wish to allow the respondent to move to the previous screen in your survey then you need to enable this option.

Note that if enabled you also need to use a theme that includes the back button.  If you do not then the default back button will be included.  (See the chapter on Editors for a more complete explanation of Themes and the Theme editor).

This option is often useful when you are testing your survey and then can be turned off before the survey is deployed.

Save & Exit:  When enabled this option will enable a respondent to press this button, which will save their responses and then come back to it at a later time and continue from where they left off.

Note that if enabled you also need to use a theme that includes the back button.  If you do not then the default back button will be included. (See the chapter on Editors for a more complete explanation of Themes and the Theme editor).

Language: SMP can appear in any language.  There currently two options – English and Chinese.  If your language does not appear please let us know and we will have it included.

Page Header:  When you select this option you are taken to a rich text editor (RTE) where you can design the header that you want for your survey.  You can upload an image from your computer (first to the Image Library and then to your survey) or point to any image on the internet.

For example – To create the header used in the survey below (the SMP banner) :

Open the "Details" popup by clicking on the details button indicated above:

Click the Rick Text Editor popup next to the "Page Header:" heading.

In the rich text editor popup click on the image icon.

This will take you to the image library. Select the folder where your image is and select the image in step 1 below. Then close the image library in step 2.

Back in the rich text editor click on the green arrow to insert the image.

Your image will now have been added to the header.  Of course, you can add anything you like and edit the HTML. It's all in your control.

Page Footer:  This option enables you to construct the contents of the footer.  Again click on the Rick Text Editor and construct your footer in the same way as you would for the header – as per the instructions above.

Loading Page: This option enables you to construct the contents of the page seen as the survey loads.  Again click on the Rick Text Editor and construct the page in the same way as you would for the header or footer – as per the instructions above.

Sample Size:  In this box, you type the total number of surveys that you wish to have completed.  When this number is reached the respondent will be sent to the “For End:” web destination nominated in the next set of options.

Note that if you input no number in the sample size box then the survey will continue to collect data until you shut it down.

Also, note that the actual quotas – that is the specific makeup of the sample across variables collected in the survey such as sex and age – are nominated in the survey itself by constructing a Quota question type and placing it in the position that you wish it to take effect.  So if you wish to place a quota of 50% males and 50% females from a total of 1000 surveys you would first type the number 1000 in the sample size box, then create a Quota question type in the question editor, nominate the question you wish to quota on, in this case gender and fill in the proportions that you wish to collect from each option of the selected question – in this case, male = 500 and female = 500.

The advantage of this system is that all the questions up until the place in which you placed the quota question is collected even if the respondent is eventually filtered out because the quota has already been reached.

Setting Exit Links:

Setting redirects will result in the respondent being taken to another location on the web once they have finished the survey, been screened out or quotered out.  These could be three different web locations, your panel providers specific exit links or your own specific sites, or you could accept the defaults.

You can nominate or create a destination for each of the three conditions – screened out, quotered out, or for the end of the survey.

Nominate the destinations you wish the respondent to go to fro each of these three outcomes or accept the defaults.

Note:  Most of the panel houses have specific destinations that they require their panel members to be exited to.  Please consult with them and ensure you use the correct links.

In the above example the user has decided to send the respondent to the default SMP locations for Screen Out:, Quota Out:, and For Complete:.

You can also design your own exit link pages.  They can be any design that you wish and are created using the rich text editor.

To do this check the box next to each exit link and a rich text editor box will appear, as in the image below.

Click on the rich text editor icon (circled 2 above) and a rich text editor will pop up as below.  Create your page using the rich text editor to input text and images as you need.

Folder:  The folder you wish to store the survey in.  This could be a client or company or staff members.
The folder must first be set up at the home screen by clicking on the tool circled below and filling in the name of the folder in the pop-up text box and pressing the add button.

Creating a Folder

To create a folder - from the main screen click on the create folder icon next to the folder drop-down (circled below).

Add the folders desired name to the "Folder Name" text box seen below and then press the Add button.  The folder will appear in the list and will be available to assign surveys to it.

To filter the list of surveys on the main screen by its folder membership click on the folder dropdown and select that folder.

Use Cookie:

When selected this option will not allow a respondent to answer a survey more than once.  It works by placing a cookie on the respondent's computer and if the respondent attempts to do the survey again they will not be allowed to continue.  This option can also be used for the "Save & Exit" button which if turned on above, will allow the respondent to save their current location and return later to the same location to complete the survey.

Note:  This method only works if the respondent attempts to the survey again from the same computer and browser.  If they clear the cache it will also stop working.

If using unique UIDs for each respondent then the cookie method will not be used even if selected.  Unique UIDs are the more robust method of ensuring that your respondents only answer a survey once and also allows the user to return to a previously saved location in the survey.  The UID method works to ensure a survey is only answered once by a respondent and allows for a save and return method, regardless of the computer or browser used.
